Collaboration with Tata Steel on Thermal Treatment of Hazardous Waste

| Category: Thermal Plant

In early 2023, Soil Treatment Systems Ltd were contacted by Mr Mark Sexton on behalf of Tata Steel with regard to the thermal treatment of a hazardous waste stream from the blast furnaces used in the steel production process.

Soil Treatment Systems Ltd advised that the TDU on our current plant would not have the temperature range to recover the zinc in the contaminated matrix.

Soil Treatment Systems Ltd contacted Aztec to understand if it was possible to construct a plant that could produce the temperature range required to successfully remove and recover the zinc.

A design was created that could achieve the desired results, and Soil Treatment Systems Ltd undertook some initial lab work using a small furnace that could run at the required temperature.

The results were forwarded to Mark Sexton to have these independently reviewed. The results showed that we had indeed exceeded the requirements, so we are currently looking at creating a demonstration plant to prove the concept. It’s hoped to carry out this work under an R&D project in conjunction with Tata Steel.
